Eddy Current Probes

Eddy current probes are making contactless measurements of the distance from the device under test using induced voltage. An alternating current energized coil is generating an electromagnetic field around the coil, whose lines are aligned to the measuring direction. If an electroconductive medium reaches this field, eddy currents going to induce in the object. The electromagnetic fields are opposed to the coil field, by what the impedance of the coil changes. The change is proportional to the distance from the device under test and is evaluated respectively.

 

An alternative to the eddy current probes is the capacitive sensor

That can also measure the thickness of non-electroconductive objects, while the eddy current cannot recognize those objects.
