Magnetostrictive transducers

Magnetostrictive Transducers

Magnetostrictive distance transducers enable contact-free and wear-free measurement. The housing of this transducer has a measuring element (waveguide) which, in interaction with an external, freely movable magnet, can map distances very accurately. Sensors of this class have been successfully used in automation, level measurement and in hydraulic cylinders at pressures up to 350 bar for many years.

Magnetostrictive Transducer Measurement Principle

In Magnetostrictive Transducers respectively hydraulic sensors a current pulse is generated inside a copper pipe for the position measuring, thereby a circular magnetic field is created which spreads bundled inside a waveguide. The permanent magnet of the Magnetostrictive Transducer forms measuring detector whose magnetic flux line is at a 90° degree angle to electric flux line of the current pulse. Because of the heterodyne of the flux lines a flexible distortion is generated inside the waveguide by magnetostriction. The distortion spreads to both sides inside the waveguide. The propagation speed amounts 2850 m/s. This mechanic pulse turns into a electric signal in the end of the waveguide. A controller calculates the run-time from the source until the Signal Conditioner. This run-time is proportional to the distance between Signal Conditioner and permanent magnet. This principle enables a contactless, nonwearing and absolute measurement. Magnetostrictive Transducers are working reliable with hydraulic cylinders, machine tools, squeezing machines, woodworking machines, rolling mills, packaging machines, assembly gantries, and cutting lines.

Magnetostrictive transducers - applications

Magnetostrictive transducers are used for position measurement. The sensors are especially used to measure the stroke of hydraulic cylinders. Their cylindrical design predestines magnetostrictive transducers for industrial application and the installation in hydraulic cylinders. Magnetostrictive hydraulic sensors are used in packing machines, plastic machines, steel rolls or in beverage bottling plants.

Hydraulic lifts

In workshops or in the automobile production cars are lifted for work on the substructure. This is usually done by hydraulic lifts. Hydraulic cylinders installed in the lifts hoist the cars. The stroke movement are measured by magnetostrictive transducers. The position measurement is especially important in automatized processes.

Magnetostrictive transducers - lift bridges

Lift bridges are built over busy waterways. These lift up when a ship wants to drive through the waterway. For this a bridge part is raised by means of hydraulic cylinders so far that the ship can easily pass underneath the lifted bridge. Magnetostrictive transducers are installed inside the hydraulic cylinders. The sensors measure the stroke and transmit the values to a control unit. The hydraulic sensors ensure that the bridge part reaches the minimum height to let the ship pass.
