Absolute encoders are sensors to determine linear or angular changes. These can record the rotational direction and change in angle of rotating objects. Changes in length are usually recorded linearly. Absolute encoders (Wikipedia) often use optically rotating sensors, whose measurement is based on counting and sensing direction of motion. A disc has several tracks consisting of pulses, which are counted optically during rotation. The absolute position is recorded by means of a second disc so that when reactivated, the absolute encoder indicates the absolute change in motion.
